A LIFE WELL LIVED

Bervin was born January 15, 1950 in Bakersfield, California to Bering and Rosley Oats. He transitioned from this life peacefully, from natural causes at the age of 74, on October 16, 2024 in his home surrounded by his loving wife Carolyn Oats and his family.

Bervin grew up in Bakersfield with his seventeen siblings. As one of his brothers mentioned, “Bervin was a Bervin.” In his formative years, he played baseball. He hated it so much that when a Philadelphia Phillies scout came out to watch him, he purposely played poorly to detract the scout from drafting him, but he loved playing basketball so much that even when he had to wear a cast from his ankle up to his hips on both legs, because of a knee condition, it could not keep him of the court.

Although, Bervin did not always know the Lord, one faithful night God revealed Himself to him and he surrendered his life to God. He was miraculously and dramatically saved from a life not pleasing to God.

He spent his early years in Bakersfield, but settled in Nevada with his wife, Carolyn whom he met in a little old town called Jena, in Louisiana. As the story goes, Bervin went to Louisiana for a spiritual conference but the Lord spoke to him that she was to be his wife. And when he got back to Las Vegas all he could talk about was his future wife Carolyn.

And when he got back to Las Vegas all he could talk about was his future wife Carolyn.

His love of cooking enabled him to excel in the culinary field. He taught culinary arts at both Clark County Community College and Indian Springs Correctional Facility. He was also part owner and operator of the Seven Seas Seafood Restaurant. Bervin was a man known to achieve whatever he set his mind too. But his greatest achievement is the legacy that he left in his wife, children and grand children.

Bervin accepted the call to ministry at the age of 21 under Rev. A.J. Thompson. After years in ministry, he felt the call to start a church plant. The True Vine Missionary Baptist Church was established in September, 1991, where he pastored until his illness prevented him from full time Ministry. However, this would not deter him, as he used every opportunity for pulling anyone around him into impromptu Bible studies, because he believed that everyone needed the Lord, and that everyone should have a relationship with Christ.

We mourn the loss of a truly wonderful man, a brilliant mind whose quick wit and infectious laughter brightened the lives of all who knew him. A talented business visionary, who approached every challenge with creativity and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on his family, his church and community. Bervin’s humor and generosity of spirit will be deeply missed, but his legacy of joy and inspiration will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. May he rest in peace, embraced by the love of Christ, and may his memory continue to inspire all who knew him.

Bervin is survived by his loving wife Carolyn Oats who steadfastly supported him throughout all his endeavors and stayed by his side until he peacefully went home to be with the Lord. His three sons Dervin Oats, Byran Oats(Katherine), Bervin DeAndre Oats(Brenise) and his only daughter Latasha Oats-Morgan(Giloh). His grandsons Tyrek Dumas, Bryan Oats, Ryan Oats, Byran Oats, Bervin Davariel Oats, Benjamin Oats, Kaeleb Morgan, Joshua Morgan, Nicholas Morgan, Oztin Morgan. His granddaughters Tiana Oats, Alexis Oats, Sierra Oats, Bethany Oats, Brenae Oats, Briella Oats, Brynlee Oats, Madison Morgan, His great grandson Bryan Oats Jr., his great grand daughter Layloni Oats, and a host of other relatives. Bervin was preceded in death by his parents Bering and Rosley Oats, his sisters Joyce McMillon, Henrietta Oats, Dolores Oats and Cheryl Oats, and his brothers Robert Oats and William Oats.
