Roger Dale Grubb

July 3, 1951 – March 26, 2023

We honor and celebrate the Inspiring Life of ROGER GRUBB. Roger will be cherished and remembered through the legacy of his family and friends.

A LIFE WELL LIVED

Roger Dale “Pop” Grubb passed away peacefully in his home in Henderson, Nevada on Sunday, March 26, 2023.  He was 71.

Roger was born in Wythe County in 1951 to Marco and Lucille Grubb.  Like many in that era, his house was bustling as he grew up with 3 brothers, Ronnie, Jerry and Johnny, as well as 3 sisters, Barbara, Frances and Tina.

After high school, on his eighteenth birthday, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, served a tour in the Vietnam War and was later stationed in Puerto Rico.  He rarely spoke specifically about his time in the military, but he reflected on this period of his life quite often.  His service time gave Roger a great deal of pride and purpose that he carried with him all the rest of his days.  He could often be heard saying, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.”

Upon his return to the states, Roger pursued his education, graduating from Wytheville Community College in 1974.  Soon after, he opened his first business with his brother Johnny, an upholstery shop, Grubb Upholstery. 

While in Roanoke, Virginia in 1977, he met the love of his life, Jodi Skeens.  Jodi became Roger’s rock, his savior, champion, and best friend.  The two had many adventures as they traveled the country, and married in 1983.  Together, they raised two children in his hometown.  Ashley and Jeremy gave Roger boundless happiness and his devotion to his family was unequivocal.  The two had him wrapped around their fingers, because in his eyes, they could do no wrong. 

In 1985, he and his wife started Homecare of Southwest Virginia and Professional Home Nursing Services.  For the next 14 years they operated this successful business and provided jobs to as many as 35 people at a time.  As the bosses, they were able to take time to travel the country.  They summered at lakes and wintered at ski resorts.  They camped at National Parks, visited countless amusement parks, and attended many sporting events.  Roger believed in providing his children with the sort of hands-on education a schoolbook just could not provide.

In 1999, after selling their home health and nursing agencies, the family moved to Bluffton, South Carolina, near Hilton Head Island.  Roger began his retirement era by spending his days fishing, boating, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles.  He loved being outside.  He started numerous projects around the house, and preferred to rotate his efforts on each one a little at a time. 

One afternoon in 2015, he got a call from Brian Conley, asking for Ashley’s hand in marriage.  Soon after walking his daughter down the aisle, he took up his most passionate hobby of all – being a grandfather.  In his granddaughter Charlie Anna, Roger found a new love, one with an attraction so strong he and Jodi couldn’t help but relocate to Nevada to be nearest to her.  He adoringly called her his Charlie Bear, and she lovingly called him Pop.

Roger was a master of figuring things out.  There was nothing he couldn’t build or repair.  Any new passion quickly led to proficiency…and self-declared expertise closely followed.  From camping, to fishing, to surfing, to carpentry, to plumbing, to lawn care, to motorcycle riding, Roger crafted his skills quickly and coached others generously.  He believed in quality over quantity, and took great care of his possessions.  He leaves behind a great many hand-crafted items, antiques, and collectibles.  

Roger was predeceased by his mother Lucille Allison and his father Marco, as well as three brothers Ronnie, Jerry and Johnny Grubb.  He is survived by his wife Jodi Skeens Grubb, his daughter Ashley Grubb Conley, his son Jeremy Caine Grubb, his son-in-law Brian Conley, his granddaughter Charlie Anna Conley, his daughter Melissa along with her husband Matt and their children Kara and Bradley Barker, his sister Barbara Crigger, his sister Frances Richmond, his sister Tina Grubb, and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his furry companions Windy, Shady, Snowball, Red Dog, Lady, Duchess, Streaks, and Carmen.  He is survived by his loving dog Nikita.

A celebration of Roger’s life will be held on July 22, 2023 from 11am to 1pm at Mt. Pleasant Church, located at 200 Mt. Pleasant Road in Wytheville, Virginia.  Lunch will be provided, and it will be a casual atmosphere of friends and loved ones. 
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, an organization Roger felt strongly about.
